Julien Ferment's My House Classics Vol.7+8 (Uk Garage / 2 Step / Speed Garage)

Julien Ferment - My House Classics Vol.7+8 (Uk Garage / 2 Step / Speed Garage)

Here is a special episode of the "My House Classics" serie. 2 episodes in 1, 2 hours of music and 26 tracks!

The first part, dedicated to the UK Garage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_garage) and its division, the 2 Step.

The second part is darker, featuring massive Speed Garage anthems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_garage). Many of them are from probably the Speed Garage master : Armand Van Helden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armand_Van_Helden).

My opinion regarding these styles of House Music : I miss them! These tracks are so groovy and bumpy... Some people say that these styles will come back soon... Maybe, but let's hope this rebirth will go further than the UK :)

Welcome to the wonderful world of sub-bass...

La vie est belle !

Enjoy.

Julien Ferment's Best Of Jovonn

Julien Ferment - Best Of Jovonn

Shame on me. I am playing house music since 1990 and I discovered Jovonn lately, in 1994 with -for me- his best track ever : Back 2 Zanzibar, played by David Morales on a mix CD.
Why lately? Because Jovonn started producing music in 1990!
Like Todd Edwards, he has his special touch : organs! He is probably the organ chorus master... I still wonder how he can be so inspired in every track!

Here is his bio, caught from Discogs.
"True lovers of Dance music have been familiar with the name JoVonn for some time now. He has excelled in every role he has played in the Dance music industry for over a decade. These roles have included singer, song writer, musician and record label owner. In 1991, the Dance scene was rocked by "Turn and Runaway" on Warner Bros. Records, which was JoVonn's second release. This classic hit, achieved the honor of charting at number 10 on Billboard. JoVonn's discography incudes such hits as "Love So Special" by Ceybil Jeffries, on which he also sang background vocals; "Step Into My Life" by Valerie Johnson; "Flutes", "Be Free" and countless others. In addition to being an internationally renowned producer and club DJ, JoVonn founded his first Dance label, Goldtone Records, in the early 1990's. His latest record label ventures, Next Moov Records and Next Moov Traxx, are dedicated to bringing back the deep, soulful sounds of the Underground.

To JoVonn, Dance music is more than just another genre. It is a feeling, an emotion, a passion. He compares the feelings it conveys to that of Gospel saying, "it's spiritual". His mission is to capture that deep, soulful Underground sound of the past, take it to another level and into the new millennium."

Enjoy.

Julien Ferment's My House Classics Vol.6

Julien Ferment - My House Classics Vol.6

Here is the new episode of the "My House Classics" collection. This time we are getting slow with BPM's from 110 to 120... As usual with the house music from the 80 and 90's, we've got artists and remixers like David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Murk, Pal Joey, CJ Mackintosh, Roger S and more. So, sit down, listen and get back in time.

La vie est belle !

Enjoy.

Alternative link :

http://www.pepsnetwork.com/podcast/classics/julien.ferment.my.house.classics.6.m4a

Tracklisting :

1- Incognito Featuring Jocelyn Brown - Always There (David Morales 12" Mix)

What can we say? 1991, David Morales releases one of his best remixes and probably the most known. When acid jazz meets house. All time classic not only for house lovers but also for dance & pop music lovers.

2- Madonna - Fever (Murk Boys Miami Mix)

Do you feel it? Do you feel the wet atmosphere of a Miami club from 1992? This remix from the Murk boys is the exact representation of the early 90's Miami sound. Deep, heavy, sexy. One of the best Madonna's remix ever.

3- Adeva - Respect (Mental Instrum Club Vocal Remix)

Adeva's best track gets remixes in 1994 by Mental Instrum. They gave to this 1988 track the sound of the 90's. So funky.

4- SDA - Vous Etes Un Arbre

MY ALL TIME HOUSE CLASSIC. Ok, I waited for the 6th volume of My House Classics to play it but I was waiting for the perfect moment. This song is about meditation, how to identify to the tree. This french track has been released for the first time on the first french house music compilation : PUR (Paris Union Recordings). This track, produced by Andy Shafte and Pascale Hospital (also known for their projects Ame Strong SA and Aleem), features a vocal sample of Guy Beaujoint, a french yoga teacher that released the first french yoga vinyl in the 60's. Vous Etes Un Arbre, is a kind of "do it yourself" track : the bass line is a sample of De La Soul's Saturday (David Morales remix) and so the vocal from Guy Beaujoint. It has never been released as 12", only on 2 compilations : PUR and Very Serious Smokin'. Thanks to Dimitri From Paris for making me discover it, during a late 1992's saturday night on NRJ radio, France. I'll never forget it. Let's hope you will enjoy it too.

5- Ingrid Chavez - Hippy Blood (Pal Joey Club Mix)

Poet Ingrid Chavez gets her first single ever (1991) remixed by the genius Pal Joey. So deep, so atmospheric. Brilliant. This track was also remixed by Eric Kupper, that is not that bad for a first single.

6- De La Soul - Say No Go (CJ Mackintosh House Of Love Mix)

"3 Feet High And Rising" is -for me- the best hip-hop album ever made. "Say No Go" is not the first single of this album but the most emblematic. In 1988, CJ Mackintosh is already in the place for this house remix.

7- Fingers Inc Featuring Chuck Roberts - Can You Feel It

1988 once again. Larry Heard, Robert Owens and Ron Wilson are known as Fingers Inc. They make an important track, maybe the house anthem. With samples from Jacksons' Can You Feel It and Chuck Roberts on the vocals, this is a must own record. Be careful, there are also alternative versions with -for the first- Martin Luther King Jr and his speech "I Have A Dream" and -for the second- Robert Owens himself behind the mic. For me, the Chuck Roberts' version is the best one.

8- Watanabe - Odoru (Unreleased Version)

Hacienda's classic from 1991. An obscure band which only released 3 EP's and especially this classic.

9- Inner City Featuring Kevin Saunderson - Big Fun (Juan's Magic Remix)

1988. Nothing to say. It's a Dance Classic with "Good Life". Inner City and Juan Atkins at their best.

10- Me'Shell NdegéOcello - If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night) (Lil Louis Li'l Freaky Mix)

Me'Shell's first single gets a hip-house remix by Lil Louis. Sexy and bouncing!

11- The Pasadenas - I'm Doing Fine Now (Steve Silk Hurley Silky Soul Mix)

Hurley and his typical happy house sound. It was always the same keys and rhythm parts, but it worked every time. Smile! Life is great!

12- 280 West Featuring Diamond Temple - Love's Masquerade (Rude Awakening Mix)

This is the virtual part 2 of the "Rude Awakening Mix", a 15 min long mix. Not everybody knows this part of the record for 2 reasons : 1/ it is very long to play 15 minutes of the same track (so great the record can be) 2/ the track has been digitally re-released but... only the first 8 minutes so not this part of the track... :) Enjoy it.

13- Michael Jackson - Rock With You (Frankie Knuckles' Favorite Club Mix)

It's hard to remix the king of pop. Frankie Knuckles does it with talent. With no doubt, THE BEST Jackson's remix ever.

14- Double Exposure - My Love Is Free (Frankie Knuckles' Classic Knuckledusted Club Remix)

Frankie does it again with this disco classic. Ok, disco inspired the garage sound. But, we have to accept that Knuckles did a great work. Bravo!

15- Whitney Houston - Queen Of The Night (CJ Mackintosh Master Mix)

From the "Bodyguard" OST, "Queen Of The Night" is the pop/dance track of the movie. So it was a need to make it remixed. CJ Mackintosh is the perfect choice for that. Funky bass line and keys. It could have been the original mix...

16- Soft House Company - What You Need...

1990. Italian band "Soft House Company" releases its only EP featuring 2 tracks, which became classics : "What You Need" and "A Little Piano". Simple. Effective. Still great. EP licensed many many times and now available as digital file.

17- Orchestra 7 - A Fantasy

One of the first Roger Sanchez works (1992), Orchestra 7's only album "Liquid Paradise" features jewels like this track "A Fantasy" but also "The Conversation" or "Love In D Minor". These tracks fully represent the early 90's sound : cheap pianos sounds, bumping rhythms, and vocal samples. Soooooooo good.

Julien Ferment's Live At Traxx Club 1998 (Rouen, Normandy, France)

Julien Ferment's Live At Traxx Club 1998 (Rouen, Normandy, France)

Traxx Club is the mythical techno/house club in Normandy, France. The club welcomed big names of electronic music in the middle of the 90's.
This mix was recorded in late 1998, it was probably the second time I played there.
It was recorded on DAT and as usual with the DJ's live performances, there were many sound level variations that I tried to erase today with compressors and maximizers.
Ok, the tracks are not the most underground ones I played but I think this mix represents well the club house sound of 1998 (especially the french touch!).
So, let's go back to a 1998's night in Traxx Club...

Tracks from Armand Van Helden, Masters At Work, Josh Wink, Jose Nunez, Dj Bertrand, Bob Sinclar, Kriss Dior, Todd Terry, Joey Negro and more !

Tracklisting :

1- Sounds Of Blackness - I Believe (David Morales Delivrance Dub & Tribal Mix)
> Discover the hard to find David Morales' Tribal Mix, a very dark remix of this gospel classic!

2- Patra - Worker Man (Satoshi Tomiie Rough & Raw Mix)
> Satoshi Tomiie made a lot of remixes of Worker Man but this one is only available on a rare and special promo edition (there were different promo editions of this track!).

3- The Beloved - Rock To The Rhythm Of Love (Johnny Vicious Go! Mix)
> Promo madness once again. This remix is only available on one pressing. Johnny Vicious delivers a deep and tribal remix, played by David Morales at Tunnel.

4- Armand Van Helden Pres. Circle Children - Zulu (Change Mix & Ndako Gboya Mix)
> Circle Children is one the numerous nicknames of Armand Van Helden. Zulu is his second release on Strictly Children with this nick. A classic thanks to its incredible rhythm, its vocals and its keys.

5- Masters At Work Feat. Jocelyn Brown - Cant Stop The Rhythm In The Street (M.K. Mix)
> Only available on a underground best of Cutting Records mixed by Danny Morales and especially made for this comp', this remix made by the incredible Mark Kinchen (the remixer of Nightcrawlers' Push The Feeling On) is so original and different from the original mix! Love it!

6- Danny Tenaglia Pres. The Look Featuring Franklin Fuentes - March (Rave Tipstrumental)
> We are talking about nicknames... The Look is one of the nicks of Danny Tenaglia (he also produced the classic Glammer Girl that is present later on this mix). Weird deep track, it's worth a listening!

7- Pet Shop Boys - Can You Forgive Her (M.K. Dub)
> MK once again. Only him can do a pumping and happy house remix of a pop song. Quite unknown but I am sure you will like it...

8- Mood II Swing Feat. Carol Sylvan - Closer (King Street Moody Club)
> Top classic of Mood II Swing. Played by the biggest house dj's like MAW, this track is part of the King Street history.

9- Sima - Give You Myself (MAXX Suite Version)
> 90's italo house classic thanks to the so beautiful remix of Massimino Lippoli aka Maxx. I discovered the radio edit of this remix on a french house comp from the 90's I bought for the Neneh Cherry's Buddy X by the Masters At Work. Now enjoy the original extended remix!

10- Tuff Production Feat. Destry - (I Wanna) Thank You (Sensory Productions Remix)
> If you wanna talk about rare tracks, this record is the perfect example. This Azuli's release has never been released officially. Only 400 copies has been pressed. And a after long investigation, I finally found the name of the remixer : Sensory Production, who made many productions and remixes for Azuli.

11- Danny Tenaglia Pres. The Look - Glammer Girl (Probably A Dub & Bochinche Prelude Ballroom Mix Moog Reprise)
> All time house classic. Glammer Girl is one of the best productions of Danny Tenaglia with its original parts (keys, moog, strings...). For info, there are also Murk remixes available on the 12".

12- Big Light - Trouble Is (Mousse T Trouble In New York Mix)
> Early Mousse T remix. A all time happy house classic! Mousse T proposes a very original remix of an excellent pop song thanks to a huge organ gimmick.

13- RuPaul - A Shade Shady (Now Prance) (Eric Kupper 12" Version)
> Golden hours of the Drag Queens movement. Superstar RuPaul joins forces with Eric Kupper for his best release (IMO).

14- Ralphi Rosario - Bardot Fever
> Drag Queens once again. Ralphi Rosario calls Byrd Bardot for a featuring on this happy house track.

15- The K London Possse Pres. Maydie Myles - Come Alive (Club Version & Zack Toms Humdrum Version)
> The rare K London Posse shoots again with its incredible sound and the huge voice of Maydie Myles. 2 remixes featured here : Club Version and Zach Toms remix as David Morales did at Tunnel a night in the early 90's.

16- Gerideau - Take A Stand For Love (Camacho & Shorty)
> Present on the first edition of this record, the Camacho and Shorty mix is quite unknown compared to the Blaze mix but I think it's worth to be discovered !

17- Interaction - Show Em How We Do It (Tommy Musto How We Club It Mix)
> So many pressings of this classic are available. But check the few ones that propose this Musto's brillant mix. Garage house at its top.

18- Lee Genesis - Ya Can't Separate Me (I'm Determined) (Tommy Musto T.S.O.P. Mix)
> Same year, same producer, same sound but I love it. Tommy Musto asks 80's singer Lee Genesis to feature on a house release and... it's sooooo good. Another garage classic for sure, played on many 90's dj's compilations.
